Activities

Taupo and the surrounding region offer activities to suit every age and ability. With just a short browse search you could be sky-diving, bungee jumping, mountain biking or visiting a gallery. But as locals, we would like to offer you our top tips for the area. Follow the links for more information.

Hot pools

There are many different hot pools to enjoy around Taupo, but our favourite is the Wairakei pools at night. These silica terraces provide stunning naturally heated hot pools. Open from 8.30 am – 9 pm most days, this is a great way to unwind and soothe any sore muscles after a day of adventures. Children under the age of 14 are not permitted at these pools however, so if you are after a more child-friendly facility, we recommend the AC Baths

Huka Falls

If you haven’t visited Huka Falls already, this is a must-see for any new travelers to Taupo. To witness 220,000 litres of water per second barreling over an 11-meter high waterfall is truly impressive. View it first from the bridge at the carpark, then take the easy 3 km walking trail which offers several lookout points of these spectacular falls. An easy activity that suits the whole family.

Breakfast at the Tipsy Trout

Our local café found in the Kinloch township is a great spot for good coffee and a tasty brunch, offering gluten-free and vegan options, this place is a local favourite. An easy 5-minute drive from our glamp site, this will be a must-do for any coffee lovers. Follow this link for opening times and further information.

Swimming

For a lake swim, you can't beat Kinloch. With a gentle shoreline, it's a safe spot for all abilities and only 5 minutes down the road from our glamp. During the summer months, a pontoon offers a great spot to practice your diving and sunbath. And for the more adventurous, the rocks at the eastern end of the bay become a favourite jumping spot for locals. After a dip, you can cross the road for an ice cream at the local dairy, or order some fish and chips, to satisfy the whole crew.

Golf & Tennis

Kinloch offers two options for avid golfers. Firstly, you have a hit at the local course, a relaxed 10 or 18 hole meander that takes in the local township. Easy and brisk play, with great scenery, this course will set you back around $15. For those after something a little more challenging, Kinloch is also the home to a world-class championship course, designed by Jack Nicklaus. As you tackle this technical course, you will enjoy stunning views of the mountains and lake to the south. But at around $250 for an 18 hole round, this course isn't for Sunday golfer.

For anyone interested in a game of tennis, Kinloch offers a free, local court. You will need to bring your own racket and balls.

Saturday markets

Every Saturday from 9am - 1pm, Taupo hosts a market at Riverside Park. This vibrant event offers all your market favourites. From fresh coffee and pastries, to vegetables and fruit. You will also find local craftsmanship on sale, including photography, paintings, jewelry, wood carvings and more. This market is a great spot for a breakfast stroll.
